Vitamin C, Pantothenic Acid & Zinc

Vitamin C, pantothenic acid and zinc reference formula at example amounts of 20 mg, 5.2 mg and 2.7 mg per serving, developed as a gummy.

Vitamin C, Pantothenic Acid & Zinc is a reference formula for brands building a gummy that combines vitamin C, pantothenic acid and zinc, around example amounts of 20 mg of vitamin C, 5.2 mg of pantothenic acid and 2.7 mg of zinc per serving. The brand sets the final amounts for its market. Reference labels span vitamin C from 10 to 126 mg, pantothenic acid from 1.6 to 12 mg and zinc from 1.35 to 25 mg, so the example is a starting point rather than a standard.

Gummy is the only format developed here, because the reference labels are almost all gummies. The development work is about the gummy itself: three small doses of an acid, a salt and a mineral salt have to survive cooking in a pectin base and still taste acceptable in a unit that is eaten as a treat.

Ingredient Composition

IngredientPer ServingRaw Material FormAlternative Form (same amount of active)
Vitamin C20 mg (example amount)L-ascorbic acid, specified on an ascorbic acid basis; 20 mg vitamin C per servingSodium ascorbate or a coated ascorbic acid, with the input recalculated for the form
Pantothenic Acid5.2 mg (example amount)Calcium D-pantothenate, specified as pantothenic acid equivalent; 5.2 mg pantothenic acid per servingD-panthenol, with the input recalculated for the form
Zinc2.7 mg (example amount)Zinc gluconate, specified as elemental zinc; 2.7 mg zinc per servingZinc citrate or zinc bisglycinate, with the input recalculated for the salt

Amounts are stated as mg of the active. Calcium D-pantothenate (C18H32CaN2O10, 476.5 g/mol; PubChem CID 443753) carries two pantothenic acid units (C9H17NO5, 219.23 g/mol; PubChem CID 6613), so 5.2 mg of pantothenic acid needs about 5.65 mg of the salt (5.2 × 476.5 ÷ 438.46). Zinc gluconate (C12H22O14Zn, 455.7 g/mol; PubChem CID 443445) carries one zinc atom (65.4 g/mol; PubChem CID 23994), so 2.7 mg of zinc needs about 18.8 mg of the gluconate (2.7 × 455.7 ÷ 65.4).

Intended Benefits & Formula Rationale

This formula is designed for products positioned around daily vitamin and mineral intake in a chewable format. Vitamin C, pantothenic acid and zinc are included together as a small, simple trio.

Intended Benefit DirectionKey IngredientsFormulation Rationale
Vitamin C intakeVitamin CVitamin C is an essential micronutrient and electron donor that is a potent antioxidant and a cofactor for biosynthetic and gene regulatory enzymes, and contributes to the cellular functions of the immune system [1]. Evidence: Referenced
Pantothenic acid intakePantothenic AcidA review reports that pantothenic acid (B5) is required for coenzyme A formation and is essential for the alpha-ketoglutarate and pyruvate dehydrogenase complexes as well as fatty acid oxidation [2]. Evidence: Referenced
Zinc intakeZincA review states that zinc was established as essential in humans in 1963, that more than 300 enzymes and more than 1000 transcription factors require zinc for their activities, and that zinc is a second messenger of immune cells [3]. Evidence: Referenced

The amounts are examples. The reviews in [1], [2] and [3] describe each nutrient separately and do not test this combination, so any claim on a finished product, and the dose for any age group, is reviewed for each market.

Available Formats

Nearly all reference labels are gummies, so one format is developed here.

Raw Material Input & Fill (Design Estimate)

Design estimates. Ascorbic acid, calcium D-pantothenate and zinc gluconate are assumed at 100% purity, so the three raw materials weigh about 44 mg per serving: 20 mg ascorbic acid, 5.65 mg calcium D-pantothenate and 18.8 mg zinc gluconate. No manufacturing overage is included.

Capsule, tablet, powder and liquid are separate projects, because a small-dose trio for a chewable has its own stability and taste logic in those formats.

Formulation Considerations

Vitamin C in a cooked base. Ascorbic acid degrades at the pH and temperature of a pectin gummy. The vitamin is added late in the cooking cycle, an overage is set from stability data, and potency is tracked on storage.
Zinc taste. Zinc gluconate has a metallic note that stands out in a small gummy. Flavor strength and acid level are tuned in the pilot run, and a different zinc salt is the fallback.
Sticking and moisture. Pantothenate salts attract moisture, which can make gummies sticky. Water activity limits, a coating and a barrier pack are part of the plan.
Products for children. The reference label is a children’s multi-nutrient gummy, and the dose, the allowed claims and the labeling for children are different from those for adults in each market. The age group and the amounts are fixed together with the market review before a formula is finalized.

Customization Options

Brands adjust the amounts, the forms, the age positioning and the add-ons.

ParameterRangeNote
Vitamin C per serving15, 20, 40 or 75 mgExamples for the brand; potency overage rises with the base temperature
Pantothenic acid per serving2.5, 5.2 or 10 mgExamples for the brand; salt weight added
Zinc per serving2, 2.7 or 5 mgExamples for the brand; salt weight added
Gummy size2 to 4 gA larger gummy lowers the active per gummy at the same serving
Add-onsVitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B12A fourth active changes the base design and the stability plan

The pilot run confirms potency of all three actives after storage, gummy texture and sticking, and the taste of the zinc in the finished gummy.
