MSM

Single-ingredient methylsulfonylmethane reference formula at 1,000 mg per serving, developed as a capsule, tablet or powder.

MSM is a reference formula for brands building a single-ingredient organic sulfur product at a default amount of 1,000 mg of methylsulfonylmethane per serving. MSM is the only active ingredient, so the development work centers on a gram-level crystalline powder: unit count and size, flow of a free-flowing salt-like crystal, and taste when the same raw material is sold as a powder.

Capsule is the lead format, with the 1,000 mg serving built as two 500 mg capsules, and the tablet and powder versions use the same raw material at 1,500 and 3,000 mg servings that appear among the reference amounts. The amount is a decision for the brand and its market review.

Ingredient Composition

IngredientPer ServingRaw Material FormAlternative Form (same amount of active)
MSM1000 mg (default amount)Methylsulfonylmethane (dimethyl sulfone), crystalline or granular powder; specification 1,000 mg MSM per servingA different particle grade of the same compound, with the same milligram amount and its own flow and compression behavior

Amounts are stated as mg of methylsulfonylmethane (C2H6O2S, 94.14 g/mol; PubChem CID 6213). MSM is a single compound, so no salt or hydrate conversion applies, and the input equals the labeled amount at the assay of the raw material.

Intended Benefits & Formula Rationale

This formula is designed for products positioned around joint and muscle nutrition. MSM is included as the single active so that the particle grade, the amount and the excipient system can be set without interaction with other actives.

Intended Benefit DirectionKey IngredientsFormulation Rationale
Dietary sulfur nutritionMSMIncluded as a popular dietary supplement that is well tolerated at up to four grams daily, with few and mild side effects, as a generally recognized as safe substance [2]. Evidence: Referenced
Joint nutritionMSMA systematic review of two MSM trials in knee osteoarthritis found positive but not definitive evidence that MSM was superior to placebo, with concerns over optimal dose and treatment period [1]. Evidence: Mixed

The amount is a stated tier, and both reviews call for work on the optimum dose and duration, so the amount, the claims and the target market stay brand decisions reviewed for each sales market.

Available Formats

The MSM reference formula is built for a capsule, a tablet and a powder version; counts per serving are design choices that the brand can adjust.

Raw Material Input & Fill (Design Estimate)

Design estimates. The input is the labeled amount divided by the assumed assay of the raw material, taken at 100% MSM, so 1000 mg of MSM per capsule serving, 1500 mg per tablet and 3000 mg per scoop are the inputs.

FormatRaw Material Input per UnitDesign FillBalance for ExcipientsVerification Before Scale-Up

Tablet1500 mg1750 mg tablet weight250 mgCompression behavior, hardness, disintegration, content assay of MSM
Powder3000 mg per scoop3200 mg per scoop200 mgScoop density, dissolution, caking, content assay of MSM

Softgel, gummy and liquid versions are separate projects, because a gram-level crystalline solid does not fit a softgel fill and a gummy matrix needs its own load and taste work.

Formulation Considerations

Gram-level load and unit count. At 1000 mg, MSM is most of the unit weight. Capsule size, tablet weight and scoop volume follow from the powder density of the chosen particle grade, so density and flow are measured on the received lot before unit sizes are fixed.
Compression of a crystalline solid. A free-flowing crystal compresses poorly at a high load, so the 1,500 mg tablet needs a binder level and a granulation step, and hardness against disintegration is tested early in sampling.
Dissolving the powder. MSM dissolves in water, so the powder version works as a drink mix. Taste is nearly neutral with a slight bitter edge, and the flavor and acid system are balanced around it.
Amount tier and evidence. The safety review in [2] reports good tolerance at up to four grams daily, and the osteoarthritis review in [1] asks for dose-finding. The amount tier is a market decision, and the dose limit for each sales market is reviewed before a product is developed.

Customization Options

Brands adjust the amount per serving, the particle grade, the format and the add-ons.
